Recovery from an Auto Injury

If you’ve been hurt in a car accident, the severity of your injuries will vary from mild to life-threatening. Because some traumatic injuries are internal, it is vitally important to have a medical evaluation right after your accident. Not all injuries are obvious to the patient – but a doctor knows what to check and how to treat anything as necessary.

Many auto injuries involve blunt-force trauma on your bones and muscles. The sudden force of deceleration can crush muscle tissue, break bones, and stretch tendons and ligaments. Therefore, it takes time for the body to restore damaged areas to their prior condition, even with medical intervention. Hence, the recovery process doesn’t stop once you exit the hospital.

If your injuries are not life-threatening, it’s good to know about some of the basics in getting your body back to normal again. Let’s talk about some of the important ways in which you can recover from your auto injury:

RICE Method

For many physical injuries, doctors recommend the RICE method to help heal the injured area. The RICE method is most applicable during the first few days after the auto accident. Make sure to consult your doctor to confirm whether RICE is appropriate for your recovery.

RICE is an acronym that stands for:

  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation

Proper rest allows your body to focus its energy on tissue repair. If you do not rest after being injured in a car accident, you risk overexerting yourself and causing more damage to your body.

The periodic application of ice helps to reduce pain and inflammation. Your doctor or physical therapist will explain how often to apply ice. Always be sure to cover the ice pack with a towel, and do not apply the ice or ice pack directly onto your skin; otherwise you could develop frostbite. Even with the towel covering, do not apply the ice pack on your injured area for too long each time.

Applying mild compression to the injured area will help to limit swelling and promote proper circulation in the area. Be sure not to make the compression too tight.

Elevation helps to reduce fluid accumulation and increases blood circulation in the affected area. It is a good idea to elevate the injured area at or above the level of the heart; this will harness gravity to naturally move fluids back toward the heart and away from the injury. The improved blood flow will help speed up the healing process.

These simple methods are useful in first aid as well as in post-accident recovery. The RICE method helps foster natural healing and helps alleviate your symptoms.

Physical Rehabilitation

After being injured in an auto accident, doctors will likely prescribe rehabilitation. This includes special exercises and other procedures meant to assist you in your recovery process.

Car crashes can inflict severe damage on your neck and back. Whether or not you undergo surgery, you will need physical rehabilitation to help you slowly regain your strength and mobility after your auto injury. Additionally, there might be pain that lingers after the accident, and rehabilitation techniques can be very useful in managing the symptoms.

Vehicular accidents are no joke. Even if you think you weren’t injured, you need to find an appropriate treatment center that can give you a thorough medical evaluation and the assistance you need during this traumatic time.
