How Exercise Helps You Control Your Weight

It’s generally accepted that exercise helps when it comes to weight management – but do you know why that is? Below are five ways exercise helps you control your weight.

  1. Muscle Mass Management. Exercise can build and strengthen muscle tissue, which increases your metabolism rate. This means your body becomes more efficient at converting the food you eat into energy, so you burn more calories – making it easier to lose weight. Managing your muscle mass gets progressively more important as you age, when you are more likely to lose muscle and gain fat.
  2. Increased Strength and Energy. When you exercise regularly, you gain muscle mass, which makes you stronger and builds endurance. You’ll find it takes less effort to carry out the same physical tasks, so you may be more apt to move more – and burn more calories. You may also notice you have more energy, which can also help with your metabolism.
  3. Better Sleep. Exercise can improve the quality and quantity of sleep. Good sleep, in turn, aids your body with healing and tissue regeneration. A healthy sleeping pattern can help boost your metabolism (and thus aid in your weight management efforts) as well as your overall well-being.
  4. Stress Relief. Being physically active is very effective at relieving built-up tension and stress. Less stress makes any type of goal-oriented lifestyle change – like weight loss efforts – more likely to be successful.
  5. Improved Mood. Exercise releases endorphins, your “feel good” hormone. With endorphins, you feel so much better and tend to be in an overall better mood. You are more likely to have a positive outlook, better body image, and in general, to feel better about yourself.

Overall, exercise helps you feel good about yourself. When you are constantly moving, you are enabling your body to increase blood flow to the different parts of your body. However, it is important to take note you should only do the exercise that is right for you. You should also remember to always listen to your body. If you feel tired, do not force yourself to do a workout as this could make you feel worse.

Remember, to successfully control your weight, you have to practice consistency. Doing a workout routine once will not provide immediate, comprehensive results. For optimal results, you should exercise regularly as well as keep an eye on your diet and nutrition.
